This weekend pretty much sums up the past 21 years of my life as a Mississippi State Bulldog fan...depressing. As most of you that will actually read this blog know, State lost to No. 9 Auburn this weekend 3-2...and yes, I'm talking about football. This was possibly the worst football game I have ever seen in my entire life. I am actually one of the most optimistic State fans you will meet. I go into every football game (besides LSU) thinking, praying, and knowing that we have a shot to win no matter what the odds are. And I really did think that we would win this weekend, despite being a 10.5 underdog. Most of the time my hopes of winning are shattered by the 2nd or 3rd quarter, which is usually when things start to get ugly. Not Saturday though. Nope, Saturday Mississippi State saw it fit to dangle that glimmer of hope in front of me for four quarters and then snatch it away at the last second. I dont know why I'm not used to it by now, maybe because I grew up in the 90's when we were actually decent so I know that it is possible to win as a Bulldog. Speaking of the 90's, the only good thing I can point out about Saturday's game was getting to see the 1998 Western Division Champion Bulldogs, as they were honored during halftime. Getting to reminisce about winning, about seeing an incredible defense which was actually complemented by an offense, and about being a respected member of the SEC was by far the highlight of the night for me. Hopefully those days will somehow repeat themselves, but I dont know how they can when we cant put points up on the board with our offense. I dont know how we can ever scratch our way out of the cellar of the SEC when we cant execute a routine fieldgoal. I dont know how anyone can stand to watch a team shoot themselves in the foot repeatedly by making decisions like going for it on 4th and 15 only down a point with near 4 minutes left, two timeouts, a punter thats having a well above average game, and a defense that has held tough all day. Despite all the heartache of Saturday and the last 21 years of being a State fan, I still fully expect to go to Atlanta next Saturday and beat Georgia Tech. I will be attending that game as well and will be just as fired up and optimistic as ever. Maybe one day my persistence will somehow pay off. Maybe one day I will see a great football team in Starkville that isn't playing against Mississippi State. Even if those days never come, I will still devote my Saturdays to watching Mississippi State football no matter how much heartache and suffering it causes me.
